The Mental Health in Children and Young People: Psychological Approaches (PGDip/MSc) course is offered by the University of Birmingham. The course aims to provide students with a multidisciplinary understanding of child and adolescent mental health problems, along with critical appraisal of psychological intervention theory and research.Course Content: The course content is designed in a way that makes use of a multidisciplinary and multilevel approach to child and adolescent mental health, focusing on the integration of psychological theory and research with therapeutic practice. The modules cover important aspects such as theory, research, and basic therapeutic skills and the opportunity to focus on more specific disorders or therapeutic approaches.Key Modules: The programme includes numerous key modules that cover a broad range of topics. The modules included in the course are Introduction to Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH), Basic Research and Statistics, Basic Therapeutic Skills, Psychological Approaches to Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Psychological Approaches to Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, Eating Disorders in Young People, and Research Project (MSc only).Accreditations: This programme is approved by the British Psychological Society (BPS) for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).Future Careers: On successful completion of the course, graduates have moved on to further research, jobs in psychology or research assistant posts, CAMH-related work in different environments (e.g. schools, hospitals, third sector organisations), clinical psychology training or further training within a specific psychotherapeutic approach.
