The Africa and Development MA at the University of Birmingham offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding Africa, its people, cultures, and development. The course is designed to equip students with specialised research training. The course combines anthropology, development studies, history and geography of Africa and spans from development initiatives and identities in Africa and Africans in the diaspora, to poverty, migration, disease, conflict, elites and the urban environment.Course Content: The course comprises 180 credits in total: 60 credits from core modules, 60 credits from optional modules, and a 60-credit dissertation. Core modules are designed to establish your interdisciplinary understanding of development while improving your theoretical grasp specifically in relation to Africa. Optional modules allow you to explore your own interests in greater depth.Key Modules: The course includes modules on Contemporary Africa: Anthropology in Practice, Africa: Anthropological Perspectives, Africa: Diversity and Development, Colonialism and Development in Africa.
