The Film and Television: Research and Production MA course offered by the University of Birmingham is designed for students who wish to develop skills in both areas of production and research. The course embodies the notion of "praxis" whereby theoretical understanding underpins and informs practice. Participants will improve their production skills by learning to operate digital cameras and edit on Final Cut Pro (FCP X), pitching ideas, storyboarding, drafting shooting scripts and more. Simultaneously, they will be engaged in research about their chosen genre and/or filming location.Course Content: The course introduces students to the world of TV and Film production, while simultaneously focusing on theoretical knowledge. The core of the program is about developing research and production skills and includes learning to operate digital cameras and edit on Final Cut Pro (FCP X), pitching ideas, drawing up budgets, writing proposals, storyboarding, and drafting shooting scripts.Key Modules: The key modules of this course include 'Factual Television', 'Film and Television: Fact and Fiction', 'Key Research Skills', 'Collaborative Documentary Production', and 'Dissertation by Practice or Traditional Dissertation'. Optional modules are also available which includes areas such as 'Popular Genres in Film and Television'.Accreditations: The course is accredited by the Guild of Television Camera Professionals (GTC) and the Royal Photographic Society (RPS).Future Careers: This course equips students with a robust understanding of both film and television production and research. It prepares them for a broad range of careers in the broadcast industry, either as independent directors/producers, camera operators, researchers for factual TV, and more.
