The Mathematics and Music (Joint Honours) course offered by the University of Birmingham offers a unique blend of mathematical and musical studies. This three-year undergraduate course integrates an understanding of abstract mathematical concepts with the exploration of music theory and practice, providing students with diverse learning experiences. The course challenges students to develop analytical, interpretative and aesthetic abilities. Course Content: The course incorporates a balanced mixture of core and optional modules in both Mathematics and Music. In the first year, students will encounter a mixture of pure and applied mathematics modules, composers and their music, harmony and counterpoint, and music history. In the second and third years, the program gets increasingly specific and students are given the freedom to shape their degree addressing their related interests in both fields. Key Modules: Examples of core modules in this course are Linear Algebra, Mathematical Analysis, The Study of Music, and Music History from 1750. Some of the optional modules are Abstract Algebra, Cryptography, Jazz Studies, and Opera.Accreditations: Not provided.Future Careers: Students graduating from this course have a variety of career options. They can pursue careers in both the music industry, such as being a professional musician, and areas which require mathematical skills, such as finance, engineering, and computing. The course also facilitates further study via postgraduate research in either of the two subjects or in education. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page here.
