The English Literature and Classical Literature and Civilisation course at the University of Birmingham is a unique joint honours degree where students get the chance to explore the literature of different periods from Middle Ages to the present, while deepening their knowledge of the literature and civilization of ancient Greece and Rome.Course Content: This course combines both English literature and classical literature and civilisation, allowing students the opportunity to dive deeply into English Literature as well as the study of ancient Greek and Roman language, literature, and civilization. The course is designed in a way that allows students to explore their own interests, whether it's modern literature or literature from the ancient world.Key Modules: Key modules of the course include English literature core, which introduces students to key aspects of critical practice and literary theories; Shakespeare’s tragedies; literature from different periods such as the middle ages, the Renaissance, the 18th century, the 19th century, as well as modernist literature. In ancient literature, students will get the chance to explore epic, tragedy, comedy, the novel, and romance. Future Careers: Graduates from this course are equipped with a broad set of transferable skills, including the ability to reason critically, collate and assess detailed and complex information, and form coherent, informed arguments verbally and in writing.
