The Computer Science Foundation Year BSc/MComp course at The University of Sheffield provides a foundation in mathematics and computing for those who did not have the opportunity to study these to a sufficient level or did not take the right kind of A levels required for direct entry onto a Computer Science degree course. The course offers integrated academic and study skills in the first year, to prepare students for the transition to studying Computer Science at the degree level.Course Content: This foundation year course takes a project-based learning approach in various modules throughout the year. It covers the Principles of Programming, Computer Systems and Applications, Concepts and Skills for the Digital Society, Mathematics for Engineering and Scientists 1 and 2, and an Academic and Digital Literacy for Engineers.Key Modules: Core modules include Principles of Programming, Computer Systems, and Applications, Mathematics for Engineering and Scientists 1 and 2. Study Skills and Numeracy are modules providing a portfolio of study, numeracy, and key skills which are embedded throughout a student's project work.Accreditations: This course has been designed to meet the accreditation requirements of BCS, The Charitable Institute for IT, under its CITP (Chartered IT Professional) standard and, for the MComp, to meet the further learning requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).Future Careers: The combination of technical and transferable skills gained on the course opens up a range of careers.
