The Speech and Language Therapy BMEDSci course at the University of Sheffield trains students to work with people of all ages who have speech, language, communication, and/or swallowing problems. The course uniquely combines study elements of linguistics, psychology, and medical disciplines with in-depth clinical training.Course Content: The course offers a blend of academic study and clinical placements. In your first year, you'll learn about human biology, the basic elements of first and second language acquisition, and various language disorders. In your second and final years of study, students expand their knowledge of the psychological and physiological dimensions underlying speech and language acquisition, understanding, and production, as well as a detailed exploration of various communication disorders.Key Modules: Some of the key modules in this course are Psychology for Speech and Language Therapy, Anatomy and Physiology, and Language Acquisition. In the final years, students undertake modules in Dysphagia, Neurological Conditions, and Critical Appraisal and Evidence Based Practice.Accreditations: This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and on successful completion of the course, students are awarded a degree and are eligible to register with the HCPC as a speech and language therapist.Future Careers: Completion of this course opens up numerous career opportunities in or related to speech and language therapy in diverse settings; both within the NHS and in schools, prisons, the voluntary sector, and private practice.
