The General Engineering with Industrial Placement Year BEng (Hons) is a four-year undergraduate course offered by the University of Sheffield. This course allows students to enjoy the breadth of possibilities in engineering, without having to commit to one specialty right at the start. The syllabus is diverse, incorporating multiple areas of engineering, and includes spending the third year in industrial placement, gaining valuable practical experience.Course Content: During the first three semesters, students learn fundamental engineering principles, exploring all the key concepts you’ll need to understand, design and develop technologies. In the fourth semester, modules can be selected that explore individual engineering disciplines in greater depth. In the second year, various modules are offered from all the engineering disciplines. These could be related to the mechanics of solids, fluids, thermodynamics, and mechatronics amongst other areas. By the time the third year arrives, students will have been able to decide which area of engineering to specialize in. The third year is spent on an industrial placement, to gain real-world experience.Key Modules: Some of the key modules included in this course are Introductory Electronics, Computational and Numerical Methods, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Alloys, Multidisciplinary Engineering Applications and Mechanics of Fluids.Accreditations: The course is fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, Institute of Highway Engineers, Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, Institute of Measurement and Control, Institution of Engineering and Technology, Energy Institute, Royal Aeronautical Society and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects for the purpose of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.Future Careers: The broad range of skills and knowledge acquired allow the graduates to pursue careers in multiple areas. Graduates can work in all types of engineering, manufacturing, construction, and consultancy. They also find roles in business, banking, the civil service, teaching and health. Often, they use their engineering background to go into designing and researching future technologies. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
