The BSc (Hons) Marine Biology at Plymouth University is a three-year full-time undergraduate programme. This course takes a holistic approach towards understanding marine life focussing on the biology of marine creatures from the largest whales to microscopic invertebrates. The course is designed to equip students with an in-depth understanding of the biodiversity and function of marine ecosystems, enabling them to further develop a career in the marine biology industry.Course Content: The elements of the course come together, with more integrated studies and students carrying out their own independent research project. Students get to understand how marine species interact with their environments both physically and biologically. They study topics including oceanography, marine vertebrates & invertebrates, ecological principles, conservation, environmental change and marine biogeography. They also gain significant fieldwork experience and undertake tasks such as identification, surveying and experimenting with marine organisms.Key Modules: Key study areas include marine community ecology, biological and ecological principles, marine and terrestrial vertebrate zoology, resilience and conservation of the seas, fieldwork in marine biology, marine predators, tropical marine biology field course, introduction to oceanography and marine sciences and marine and terrestrial invertebrate zoology. Accreditations: This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol). Future Careers: Graduates find positions in environmental consultancy, fisheries and aquaculture, marine resource management, marine conservation and policy, marine environmental education, marine laboratory, voluntary and charity work and postgraduate research.
