The MEng Mechanical Engineering within Biomedical Engineering offered by the University of Southampton is an integrated masters program providing understanding in mechanical engineering principles, combined with the knowledge of biomedical engineering. The four-year degree offers a dynamic learning environment, and opportunities for placements and research projects.Course Content: The course covers six core areas of study: mechanical systems; materials and design; thermofluids; mathematics and computing; project and enterprise; and topics in medical engineering. Over the first two years, students will study fundamental principles of engineering and healthcare technologies. In the third and fourth years, they delve into more advanced topics, including: biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and advanced medical imaging. The course also encourages students to undertake a research project or an industry placement.Key Modules: The course comprises key modules, including: Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Mechanics and Materials 3, Control and Instrumentation, Industry-led Biomedical Engineering Group Project, and MEng Research Project.Accreditations: The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Also, the degree is recognised by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) for the purpose of partially meeting the educational requirement for membership.Future Careers: This degree prepares students for a wide range of career options – from medical device manufacturing to the NHS Clinical Engineering Service. Graduates can also take up roles in industries, such as: automotive, aerospace, energy, and many more in the mechanical sector. Moreover, the degree provides a foundation for further study or research. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
