The One Modern Language and Linguistics BA programme at the University of Southampton provides students with a comprehensive understanding of both the principles of language and linguistics and the practice of a chosen modern language (French, German or Spanish). This programme combines language learning with theoretical and applied linguistics, providing students with a deep understanding of the nature of language and communication.Course Content: The course is a mix of language learning and linguistics. Students choose their preferred language from French, German, or Spanish and specialize in it. In linguistics, students explore the complexities of language including sound, sentence structure, meaning, and how language varies and changes. In addition to the core modules, students can choose from a range of optional topics to further extend their knowledge and skills.Key Modules: The courses consist of modules in the chosen Modern Language, Introduction to Linguistics and Phonetics, The structure of English, Sociolinguistics, Syntax, Psycholinguistics, and Bilingualism.Future Careers: Graduates from this course gain a wide range of transferable skills that will prepare them for a variety of careers. Many graduates have found careers in translation, interpreting, teaching, publishing, the media, and the civil service.
