The BEng Hons Nuclear Engineering with Placement Year at Lancaster University is a comprehensive four-year course designed to prepare students for a career in the nuclear industry. The program emphasizes the application of engineering principles in the nuclear energy production, from the design aspect to solving practical engineering problems. Participants also have the opportunity to spend a year working in industry as part of a placement.Course Content: The first two years cover fundamental aspects of engineering principles and then introduce nuclear-specific subjects such as Radiation Protection and Nuclear Reactor physics. The third year gives you the opportunity to carry out a significant project on a topic of your choice. During a placement year, you will work in the nuclear or a nuclear-related industry. In the final year, you will study more specialist nuclear subjects.Key Modules: Some of the essential modules include Mathematics and Professional Skills for Engineers, Engineering Design, Engineering Thermodynamics, Mechanics of Solids, Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Clean-up, Mechanical Engineering Design Project, and Nuclear Power Systems and Safety Case Studies.Accreditations: The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). This accreditation assures that the course meets the educational requirement for chartered engineer status.Future Careers: Lancaster University's graduates have an excellent employment record and the course will prepare students for roles within the nuclear industry, designing and building the systems and processes that enable energy to be generated from nuclear power plants. Students could work within any sector of the nuclear industry from power generation through to decommissioning, waste management, or defence. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
