The Mechanical Engineering with Placement Year BEng Hons course at Lancaster University is designed for students who wish to gain a deep understanding of the principles and applications of mechanical engineering, complimented by strong design and manufacturing knowledge. The course includes a placement year, providing invaluable practical experience at a professional institution.Course Content: This course includes core modules in mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and design. The second year advances this core knowledge, and introduces new topics such as materials, thermodynamics, electromechanical systems and manufacturing. The curriculum covers theoretical, computational and experimental techniques, plus a broad view to the industrial and business world.Key Modules: Each year consists of compulsory modules and optional modules. Students will study shapes, materials and structures, electricity and electromagnetism, dynamics, thermodynamics and fluids and further mathematics in the first year. In the second year, students focus on dynamics, thermodynamics, solid mechanics, and design and manufacturing among other topics. The final year includes modules on vibrations and stability, thermal power and heat transfer, and advanced cad/cam.Accreditations: The degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and satisfies, in part, the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration for the cohort intakes from 2016 up to, and including, 2021.Future Careers: A degree in Mechanical Engineering opens up a variety of career paths into sectors such as energy, transport, environment, healthcare, materials and more. Graduates can aspire for careers in research and development, consultancy, design and manufacturing, management, and teaching. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
