The Design (Placement Year) BA Hons (W282) at Lancaster University is a diverse and dynamic programme that allows students to explore a unique blend of design theory and practice which focuses on people, products, and spaces. This course encourages students to gain practical industry experience through a placement year, applying the design principles learned in class to real-world contexts and thus enhancing their skills and career prospects. Course Content: Students will study Design in the first year along with a choice of minor subject. This course delivers a strong understanding of design principles combined with the freedom to take minor subjects. The second and third years are focused on applying design thinking in a range of contexts guided by academic staff and expert practitioners. This will ensure that students develop wide-ranging, transferable, design and work-based skills that employers value.Key Modules: In the first year, core modules include 'Introduction to Design Thinking', 'Design Practice' and 'Design: People and Spaces'. In the second and third years, core modules include 'Design Futures', 'Work-Based Learning' and 'Design in Business and Society', among others. Students also have the option to choose from a wide range of elective modules to tailor their learning to their interests.Future Careers: Graduating students from this course go on to successfully establish careers in a wide array of sectors like product design, user experience (UX) design, user interface (UI) design, service design, design management, and design consulting.
