MSc Social Science Research Methods (Criminology)

The Social Science Research Methods (Criminology) MSc at Cardiff University is a full-time, one-year course, or part-time over three years, aimed at equipping students with a diverse range of research skills and understanding of the theoretical and policy issues relating to criminology. This course is designed for individuals who want either to develop their competence and knowledge in social sciences research, or to pursue further academic studies in criminology or other related fields.Course Content: The course content for the Social Science Research Methods (Criminology) MSc equips students with the skills to carry out research across a broad range of areas relevant to social sciences in general and specifically to criminology. It also develops a depth of knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and policy issues associated with the criminological study. Students benefit from study in an active research community, where they are encouraged to develop their own area of specialism.Key Modules: The key modules of the course include Philosophy of Social Science Research, Foundations of Social Science Research, Quantitative Methods 1 & 2, and Qualitative Methods 1 & 2, along with optional modules like Issues in Crime and Justice, Criminal Justice and Punishment, and Theoretical Criminology.Accreditations: This course is accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), part of UK Research and Innovation. It is a pathway within the Wales Doctoral Training Partnership. Cardiff University School of Social Sciences is also an ESRC-accredited Doctoral Training Centre.Future Careers: Successful completion of this course will equip students with the necessary skills to embark on a career as a social science researcher, or to take up research posts in the public, private, or voluntary sector.
