The English Language and Linguistics BA at Cardiff University encourages students to delve into the study of language in depth. With a focus on how language functions, this undergraduate course is designed to explore key concerns of linguistics, while building on students' ability to handle complex concepts and theories. Lessons are intricately designed to aid students' understanding of the English Language in relation to linguistics and the multicultural world.Course Content: Students are exposed to the foundational concepts behind the study of language from the first year, with a mixture of compulsory and optional modules. The second year deepens the understanding of various linguistic sub-disciplines and opens up further elective modules. The third year combines specialist studies in areas of the student's choosing, allowing them to further consolidate their interests and expertise. Key Modules: The course includes compulsory foundational modules such as Language and the Mind, Exploring Language Structure and Phonetics. Optional modules range from History of English, Bilingualism, Text and Discourse Analysis, to Language Teaching Methodology amongst many more. In the final year, students have the opportunity to conduct their own independent research project under staff supervision. Future Careers: This course offers a sound basis for careers in any area where an in-depth understanding of language is needed, such as teaching (especially language teaching), language therapy, forensics, lexicography, publishing and information technology.
