BSc Biochemistry

The Biochemistry BSc (C700) course at Queen's University Belfast provides a comprehensive understanding of the chemical processes occurring in living matter. This full-time course spans over three years with an optional placement year after the second year.Course Content: The course provides students with knowledge and understanding of biochemistry through study in areas such as biochemical techniques, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, advanced protein biochemistry, and advanced molecular biology and biotechnology. The programme involves modules across a range of biochemical disciplines and the teaching is informed by the research in the School of Biological Sciences. Key Modules: Stage 1 includes modules like Cells and Biomolecules, Genetics: Genes and Genomes, Intermediary Metabolism, and Biological Chemistry. Stage 2 offers modules such as Molecular Genetics, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and Bioanalytical Chemistry among others. Stage 3 has a Research Project along with modules like Advanced Molecular and Structural Biology, Advanced Protein Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics. Accreditations: The Biochemistry BSc (C700) course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol). Future Careers: The programme prepares students for careers in a range of industries. Given the strong research component of the course, many students find employment in the biotechnology, biomedical, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as securing roles in teaching, forensic, and environmental science among others.
