The BSc Microbiology with Professional Experience at University of Reading is an immersive program that empowers students to learn about the microorganisms that shape our world. This is a 4-year undergraduate course offering students the chance to study laboratory techniques and contemporary ideas in microbial biology, as well as gain a year of professional experience in the field.Course Content: The program focuses on exploring viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and prions, and their roles in the environment, industry, and human health. The course modules cover cellular structure, microbial behaviour, bacterial genetics, virology, immunology, infectious diseases, and microbial ecology. The program also includes an integrated year of professional experience, offering students the opportunity to work in industry or undertake a research placement.Key Modules: Year 1 consists of '#Life 101' and '#Life 102'. Year 2 covers Microbiology, Cellular Microbiology, and Biomolecular Technology among others. In Year 3, students engage in their year-long professional experience, while Year 4 returns to academic study with options like Virology, Microbial Ecology, and Immunology as well as Infections and Epidemics.Accreditations: The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting, in part, the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).Future Careers: Upon graduation, students can expect opportunities in a wide range of sectors including the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare, environmental, and forensic science.
