The MChem Chemistry with a Year in Industry and a Year studying Atmosphere and Environment is a five-year undergraduate course offered by the University of York. This programme integrates the study of chemistry with a combined focus on technical and business-related skills. Through this course, students gain an insight into the chemical industry by taking part in a supervised project by spending a year in an industry, as well as have the opportunity to understand climate change and pollution from a scientific perspective.Course Content: The course provides a fundamental understanding of Chemistry including topics like organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry along with units on spectroscopy and quantum mechanics. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge while acquiring analytical skills. During the third year, students undertake an industrial placement where they apply the skills they have learned. In the fourth year, students study the atmosphere and environment wherein they learn about climate change, pollution, and chemical processes in the atmosphere. The final year focuses on specialised elements of chemistry through an extensive research project.Key Modules: This course includes key modules such as Foundations in Physical Chemistry, Atomic Structure and Periodicity, Bonding and Reactivity and Biologically Active Molecules among others in Year 1. Further, they study modules like Quantum Mechanics, Organometallic Chemistry, Thermodynamics and Radical Chemistry in Year 2, and various other modules in following years.Accreditations: The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry ensuring that students receive a broad, well-rounded curriculum and a high standard of teaching.Future Careers: This course prepares students for a wide range of career paths within academic and industrial research, teaching, health and environmental sciences, public policy, technical marketing, patent law, data analysis and more.
