The MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture at the University of York is a one-year, full-time program designed for students interested in-depth study of a broad range of texts and ideas, from 1850 to the present day. This course offers an opportunity for in-depth engagement with the ideas and histories that have shaped the contemporary world.Course Content: The core of the program is a unique module that gives students the opportunity to develop a wide-ranging interdisciplinary approach to the contemporary. Here, students will have the freedom to explore a variety of texts - from literary novels to photography, from ecocriticism to gender studies. The course allows students to explore their interests and to shape their own pathway, with the module options including everything from post-colonial literature to the study of contemporary American fiction, and from renaissance and Romantic literature to the study of Hollywood cinema.Key Modules: 'The Contemporary' forms the unique core module, complemented by two period-specific modules from a wide range of options including: 'Modernist Cultures', 'Victorian Literature and Culture', 'Romanticism', 'American Modernities', among others. Future Careers: This MA program provides students with key skills in research, presentation, critical thinking, project management, and group work that could be useful in a range of careers. These could include arts administration, journalism, publishing, copywriting, teaching, PR, and roles within the culture industries.
