BSc (Hons) Biotechnology

The BSc Biotechnology course offered at the University of York is a three-year undergraduate degree program broadly designed to provide students with a deep understanding of biotechnology, how it impacts society, as well as the practical skills needed for industry-relevant research and development. The course is highly interdisciplinary, enabling students to gain insights into molecular biology, gene technology, and bioinformatics to name a few.Course Content: The course commences by imparting key concepts in biosciences in the first year. In the second year, the program offers compulsory modules such as Gene Technology, Protein Function, and Microbial Biotechnology. Third-year modules provide an understanding of cutting-edge research in Biotechnology with the opportunity to interact with industry representatives. Practical lab experiences are intertwined throughout the course which includes research project work. Key Modules: The program consists of multiple key modules including Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Introduction to Biotechnology, Genes and Mechanisms, Genomics and Bioinformatics, Bioreactor and Laboratory skills among others. Future Careers: Graduates of the BSc Biotechnology program hold strong potential to go straight into relevant work in sectors such as pharmaceutical, environmental, and food technology.
