The BA German and History with a Year Abroad course offered by the University of York is a fully immersive four-year program which combines intensive language classes with an in-depth understanding of the country's history. The program features a third-year component dedicated solely to studying or working abroad, giving students a unique opportunity to experience Germany's culture firsthand.Course Content: This course offers a combination of core and optional modules. In the first two years, students split their time between language modules and exploring key moments in history, including everything from Viking invasions to the role of women in Nazi society. During the year abroad, students have the chance to either study at a partner university or work on a placement with a German-speaking organisation. The final year of study lets students choose from a wide range of specialized modules.Key Modules: Core modules include Perspectives on History, History of Art, Global War, Communism and Nazism, Dissent and Discontent, Modern History, Practice in Literary Translation, Teaching English in Schools, Family and Nation in German Culture, and German Society and Culture. The optional modules cover more specific areas of both German language and German history.Future Careers: Having a broad range of skills, graduates are equipped for various careers in areas such as teaching, translating, public administration, business, finance, journalism, publishing, arts management, and the voluntary sector.
