BA (Hons) Criminology

The BA in Criminology at the University of York is a comprehensive course that provides a strong foundation in criminological theories of crime, deviance, and social control. The course explores why people commit crime, how society responds to crime, and how offending behaviour can be changed. It also offers a detailed understanding of the criminal justice system and societal responses to crime and deviance.Course Content: The course comprises a broad range of topics in studying criminology. It starts with the basics in the first year, where students learn foundational skills in criminology and social policy. Throughout the course, students study various modules such as "Crime, Controversies and Debates" and "Justice, Punishment and Rehabilitation". From the second year, students have the opportunity to tailor their studies through optional modules and interests including race, religion, gender, mental health, drug use, and victimization. Key Modules: Some of the key modules include Understanding Criminology; Crime, Justice and Society; and Criminological Theory. In the final year, students complete a dissertation in Criminology. Future Careers: The BA in Criminology degree opens up a range of career opportunities in sectors such as probation and prison service, policing and the courts, immigration, research and policy development, or welfare services.
