The Environment and Sustainable Development (ESD) MSc offered by UCL is designed to provide a sophisticated understanding of the role of environmental sustainability in combating poverty and social inequalities at a global scale. It gives a critical understanding of key sustainability theories, applied policy, and methodological tools needed to rethink old systems and bring about change.Course Content: The course explores the environmental degradation caused by development activities, and social inequalities in the context of the global political economy. It covers a range of sustainability theories, applied policy, and methodological tools needed to rethink old systems and bring about change. In the first term, students learn core concepts and skills. In the second term, they complete an international field trip to learn about sustainable development strategies in an international context. The research term includes a dissertation based on field data, or a consultancy report.Key Modules: Scanning the modules, students will gain skills in "Environment and Sustainable Development"; "Urban Sustainability, Policy and Planning"; "Participation in Policy and Planning"; "Environmental Values"; "Introduction to Social Science Methods"; among others. There will also be an international field trip and a research term for practising their gained knowledge.Future Careers: Graduates from this course have gone on to work in many fields related to sustainable development, in various international organisations, in public and private sector planning, for NGOs, in academic research and for consultancy companies.
