The Engineering with International Development MSc programme offered by University College London (UCL) aims to create a new type of graduate engineer who can address the challenges of sustainable development in an increasingly globalized society. This multidisciplinary, innovative one-year programme helps students to understand how to develop solutions for the developing world which are appropriate, sustainable, and beneficial for society.Course Content: The programme blends modern engineering, socio-economic and policy issues. It provides exposure to the clients, beneficiaries, and contexts in which international development projects are developed and implemented. Modules cover topics including policy, ethics, impact assessment, housing, disaster risk reduction, energy systems, water and sanitation, environmental issues, and the inherent challenges of working in a development context. Key Modules: Key modules include Engineering Concepts for Development, Housing, Water and Sanitation for Development, Disaster Risk Reduction for Development, Intersectoral Design Project, and Integrated Group Project. There are also a series of optional modules such as Project Management, Energy Systems and Sustainability, Advanced Air Quality Control, Urban Flooding and Drainage, and Infrastructure in Emergencies.Future Careers: Graduates from this program have found jobs with development NGOs, engineering consultants, government agencies, private sector construction firms, and with policy-making bodies. The skills obtained on this MSc are transferable to many sectors including environmental engineering and consultancy, the charity sector, and the finance sector among others.
