The Digital Anthropology MSc at UCL is a unique programme that tackles the anthropological study of the digital world, considering both the digital aspect of anthropological and ethnographic research and the study of the dramatic changes brought about in our lives by new digital technologies. It combines theoretical perspectives with intense training in multiple methods, emphasizing a merged learning approach that involves both face-to-face and digital resources.Course Content: The focus of the programme is on the understanding of both the cultural phenomena and the technical practices involved in new digital technologies. It transgresses conventional boundaries between technology and the arts, health, education, government, and the third sector. It moves from an emphasis on coding to consider the aesthetic, communicative and emotional subtleties that differentiate each digital medium. Key Modules: This MSc includes compulsory modules in Approaches to Digital Anthropology, Digital Cultures in Asia and Materials in Digital Cultures, amongst others. Optional modules are available, including those on Researching Digital Practices and Anthropology of Social Media, and students also undertake a dissertation in Digital Anthropology. Future Careers: Digital Anthropology course graduates from UCL will be equipped for a range of professional sectors, including: UX research and design, social media management, digital marketing, IT and digital policy, technology and digital innovation and project administration, data analysis, digital government initiatives, consulting and research.
