MSc Conservation

The Conservation MSc course at UCL is designed to provide students with advanced training in the field of conserving the world's architectural and archaeological heritage. The course offers a unique blend of theoretical and practical training, providing the necessary skills and knowledge for a career in conservation or a related field of study.Course Content: The Conservation MSc programme focuses on the principles, theories, and practices of architectural and archaeological heritage conservation. It explores how different cultures and heritage values impact conservation and how evidence-based practice can inform conservation decisions. Students also learn about materials science, deterioration mechanisms, and conservation treatments alongside ethical considerations, policy, and legislation related to conservation.Key Modules: The course comprises modules such as Issues in Conservation: Ethics, Law, and Economics; Materials: Science and Deterioration; and Skills for Conservation Management. There are also optional modules related to Archaeology, Architecture, Collections, Preventive Conservation, and Skills that students can choose from. Additionally, there is a compulsory dissertation project that enables students to undertake in-depth research on a conservation topic of their choice.Accreditations: UCL's Conservation MSc is accredited by the Institute of Conservation (Icon), the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA), and the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
