The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Pre-service MA course at University College London (UCL) is an intensive programme designed to equip students with the essential pedagogical knowledge and practical teaching skills they need to be effective English language teachers. The course combines synchronous online and face-to-face teaching and focuses on practical teaching skills alongside theoretical insight.Course Content: The course content is divided into compulsory and optional modules. With compulsory modules, students gain grounding in the description and analysis of English, language teaching methodology, and research skills. Optional modules, aligned with faculty research expertise, offer in-depth understanding in areas such as materials development, data analysis, teacher education, etc. Dissertation is also a significant part of the course content where students undertake original research on a topic relevant to TESOL.Key Modules: Key modules for the course are - English in Use, Second Language Acquisition and Language Teaching, Materials & Course Design, and Language Teaching Classroom Practice. Additionally, students choose from a set of optional modules which include Teacher Education, Testing & Assessment in Language Learning & Teaching, Technology-Mediated Learning and more.Accreditations: Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Future Careers: Graduates of this course can take up roles as English language teaching professionals in a variety of contexts in the UK and around the world, including in language schools, education consultancies, international development agencies, and publishing houses.
