The English: Issues in Modern Culture MA program at University College London is a full-time, one-year study program. The course enables students to engage in specialised study on a variety of aspects of modern culture with an emphasis on the wide-ranging impact of the Renaissance period. Course Content: The course offers a framework of seminars that focus on key debates in the study of modern literature, examining the historical and theoretical issues that bear upon the interpretation of literary texts. Students are able to develop their own interests from a variety of options, including the study of satire, romantic and modernist poetics, science and literature, and the legacy of the imperial past in contemporary culture. Each week in the first term, students participate in research seminars to develop their understanding of the history and problems of literary criticism.Key Modules: Key modules include 'Reading Modernity', 'Renaissance Pastoral and its Legacy', and 'The Contemporary Novel: Practice as Research'. In these modules, students are expected to read, present and discuss material at an advanced level. A Research Methodologies module is also offered to help students conceptualise frameworks for their dissertation.Future Careers: This program can lead to further research or to a variety of careers that call for thinking analytically and critically - specifically those where the ability to think differently from others and fashion a nuanced argument are prized.
