BA Finnish and Yiddish

The Finnish and Yiddish BA course offered by University College London (UCL) renders an in-depth understanding of the Finnish and Yiddish languages. The three or four-year full-time program not only focuses on language proficiency but also teaches their literature, linguistics, history, societies, and cultures. This course combines equal learning of both languages in a manner that helps students gain a working knowledge of the languages initially and eventually fluency. Course Content: The course delves deep into the study of the Finnish and Yiddish languages, their literature, linguistics, history, societies, and cultures. Students will learn about the history and the current situation of the languages in the first year and supplement language study each year with a wide variety of module choices. These include something as diverse as Sexuality and Gender in Modern Yiddish Literature to Finnish sociolinguistics. Students will gradually increase their understanding of the languages' syntax, vocabulary, and discourses, alongside advancing their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The fourth year involves a year abroad for an immersive language experience.Key Modules: Some of the key modules include Literary Translation, Dissertation in Scandinavian Studies (Finnish), and Modern Language Plus. These modules focus on literary interpretation, enhancing language proficiency, and intercultural understanding.Future Careers: Students graduating from this program can progress into diverse fields.
