The Dutch and Swedish BA undergraduate degree at UCL combines two related languages and cultures, giving students an insight into Dutch- and Swedish-speaking societies, as well as their histories, literatures, and linguistics. This course gives students the opportunity to study literary and social movements, political and cultural histories, as well as gaining a nuanced understanding of language structures and uses. Course Content: The course syllabus covers areas including the history, politics, literature, and linguistics of Dutch and Swedish societies, whilst exclusive modules for both language subjects provide an in-depth look at specific cultural, historical, or literary movements. In the third year, students will spend time in the Netherlands or Flanders and Sweden, immersing in the cultures and perfecting their language skills.Key Modules: Some of the key modules of the course include 'Introduction to Dutch and Flemish History and Culture', 'Dutch Language for Beginners', 'Swedish Language', 'Themes in Swedish and Scandinavian History', and 'Scandinavian Literature in Translation'. Accreditations: All Dutch modules are credited by the Nederlandse Taalunie (Union of the Dutch Language) and successful completion of the degree will allow exemptions from the inter-university examinations in the Netherlands and Belgium.Future Careers: Graduates of the Dutch and Swedish BA will be well prepared for careers in media, writing and publishing, translation and interpreting, academia, business, tourism, government, diplomacy, non-governmental organizations, or further study.
