BA Czech and Portuguese

The Czech and Portuguese BA course at the University College London (UCL) offers students a unique opportunity to explore the languages, literatures, and cultures of the Czech Republic and Portuguese-speaking countries. This 4-year full-time program includes a year of study abroad, further enhancing the students' understanding and proficiency in both languages.Course Content: The course comprises intensive language modules, literature, and culture studies. In the first two years, students will receive a solid foundation in both Czech and Portuguese with a focus on contemporary spoken and written language. Additionally, they will be introduced to important figures, movements, and periods in Czech and Portuguese history, literature, and culture. Students will then spend the third year abroad in a Czech-speaking and a Portuguese-speaking country. They will return to UCL for their final year integrating language, literature, and culture through a focus on translation, text interpretation, and intercultural communication.Key Modules: The key modules in this program include Cultural Histories of Bohemia, Lusofonia in Focus, Advanced Czech Language, and Advanced Portuguese Language. Some of the final year modules are Modern Czech Literature in European Context, the Portuguese Cultural Identity in Modern Times, Translation from Czech and Portuguese, and Portuguese and Czech in Social and Cultural Context.Future Careers: Graduates from this program have a wide range of career prospects, including teaching (both initial language teaching and teaching in secondary/ higher education), translating/ interpreting, working in the media, marketing, tourism, and government service.For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
