The Bulgarian and Yiddish BA course offered by UCL provides a unique opportunity to study two languages and cultures that, though geographically distant, share a common history of migration, diaspora, and trans-nationalism. Students will be able to gain expertise in both Bulgarian and Yiddish and understand their cultural significance.Course Content: This course primarily focuses on combining intensive language study with the exploration of a wide range of Bulgarian and Yiddish-related topics. Students can learn from the ancient times to the present day, covering history, society, literature, cinema, art, architecture and more within the geopolitical contexts. A special emphasis is on the history and culture of the Sephardi Jews in the Balkans, whose liturgical language was a form of Old Spanish.Key Modules: This courses include various modules such as Language, Culture and Identity, Yiddish Language and Culture, and Central and East European Cinema. It also comprises modules like Nations, Identity and Power, and History of Central and Eastern Europe.Future Careers: Graduates from this program have gone onto careers in a range of professions including journalism, NGOs, business, diplomacy, politics, teaching, academia, and the culture industry.
