The Bulgarian and Hungarian BA course at the UCL is a four-year degree program that provides students with the opportunity to study two of the major languages and cultures of Central and Eastern Europe. This course equips students with the necessary skills to master the languages, translate texts, interpret films, and explore literature, which will allow them to immerse in the cultures of both Bulgaria and Hungary.Course Content: The first year of the course covers an introduction to both Bulgarian and Hungarian, with a focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. There is also an introduction to the culture, history, and society of both regions. The second year allows students to continue with language studies, while introducing more in-depth modules on literature, history, and culture. The third year is typically spent abroad where students experience living in either Hungary or Bulgaria. The final year allows students to deepen their understanding with advanced language skills and more specialized cultural and historical studies.Key Modules: The key modules include Bulgarian A: Grammar and Texts, Hungarian A: Grammar and Texts, Bulgarian Language and Literature, Nation, Myth and Identity in Modern Central and Eastern Europe, among others.Future Careers: This course is excellent preparation for careers where specialist knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as high-level language skills, are in demand.
