BSc (Hons) Biology

The BSc Biochemistry course offered at the University of Bath provides students with a firm grounding in practical laboratory skills, an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying health and disease, and will expose them to the latest technologies employed in bioscience research. The course is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue a career in industrial or academic research, or who are interested in the wider aspects of biochemistry such as product development.Course Content: The course is divided into different stages, with each stage building on the knowledge gained in the previous one. Students start with the fundamentals of biochemistry, including basic concepts in biology and chemistry. In subsequent phases, they dive deeper into the subject, exploring across cell biology, genetics, metabolism, and molecular biology. Modules also cover broader aspects such as the application of biochemistry in medicine, biotechnology and the environment. Key Modules: Key modules include Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Intro to Microbiology & Cell Biology, Biomolecules: Structure Function & Analysis, Communication & Skills in Biosciences 1 and 2, Molecular Biology of the Gene, Microbial Physiology & Genetics, and Genome Integrity & Cancer. Spot-light on Practice, a stage 2 module, allows students to work in small groups on a literature-based project mimicking a mini-research conference.Accreditations: The BSc Biochemistry is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).Future Careers: Completing this course opens up a range of opportunities for graduates in the industrial and academic scientific sectors. Some choose to work in laboratories in a technical role, while others opt for jobs within bioscience industry i.e., marketing, sales or regulation.
