The English Language and Linguistics and English Literature course at the University of Kent is designed for students curious about the English language and how it works, while also being enthusiastic about literature. This joint honours programme allows students to explore both the language in its many forms and literature from different periods and across various genres.Course Content: Students study 120 credits each year, split equally between both subjects. The program offers teaching in English Language and Linguistics focusing on the description of modern English; nature of language, including sounds, words, sentence structures, and meaning. As for English literature, students engage with a wide range of works from a range of periods, exploring them in their historical and cultural contexts. Each stage allows for optional modules so the student can tailor the degree to their interests.Key Modules: Some significant modules for the English Language and Linguistics portion include Foundations of Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, while important modules for English Literature include The Book and the Film: Adaptation Studies, Wild Writing: Literature and the Environment, Rebels with a Cause: Reading Dissent in Early Modern England, Postcolonial Images of Africa, and Modernism.
