The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) programme offered by the University of Surrey is dedicated to exploring the workings of the human body, right down to the molecular and cellular levels. This course encourages students to discover the leading edge of human health and disease. With an emphasis on practical learning within laboratory settings, students are able to engage with the core concepts and techniques of biomedical science.Course Content: The course is divided into three levels with each level becoming more advanced and specialized. In the first year of the programme, students are introduced to the basic principles of biochemistry, cell biology, human physiology and microbiology. In the second year, focus is given to molecular genetics and bioinformatics, blood sciences, infection and immunity, and medical microbiology. The final year includes more advanced modules, such as clinical biochemistry, haematology and transfusion science, cellular pathology and microbiology, and medical genetics.Key Modules: Some key modules across the three levels include Human Physiology, Fundamental Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics and Bioinformatics, Infection and Immunity, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion Science, Cellular Pathology with Microbiology, and Medical Genetics.Accreditations: The University of Surrey's Biomedical Science degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Future Careers: This degree can lead to a number of career paths including biomedical scientist within a hospital laboratory, research scientist in the pharmaceutical diagnostics industry, or as a primary and secondary teacher. Other options include scientific writing, roles in scientific consultancy, health and safety, sales and marketing roles within related industries. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
