The Biochemistry BSc Honours degree at the University of Aberdeen offers an in-depth exploration of life at the molecular level, with comprehensive coverage of all aspects of biochemistry. This course focuses on understanding the structures of biological macromolecules, the metabolic pathways that occur in cells, and the biology of cells which includes molecular biology.Course Content: The course examines the ways in which biochemistry can be applied to issues of medical relevance including gene cloning and genetic engineering, the cell cycle and cancer, and infectious diseases. Modules include Molecular Biology, Chemical Skills for Bioscience, Proteins and Enzymes, and Metabolism.Key Modules: The course includes a variety of key modules. In the first and second years, students take courses in chemistry, biology, and molecular biology to gain a firm foundation in biochemistry. In the third and fourth years, the level of specialization increases with courses on protein structure and function, enzyme kinetics, metabolism, and the genetic control of cellular function. In the final year students have an opportunity to undertake a project, working in a research laboratory.Accreditations: The programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.Future Careers: Graduates of this Biochemistry program can expect career opportunities in a variety of fields including biomedical, pharmaceutical, food and brewing industries, forensics, environmental agencies, and hospitals. Others use their degree as a stepping stone into further study and a career in academia or medicine. For more information on this course, please visit the official course page.
