The Popular Music BMus (Hons) course offered by the University of Huddersfield is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary academic understanding of popular music, along with practical skills in musicianship, production, composition, and entrepreneurship. This full-time undergraduate degree encourages critical thinking about the cultural, social, and economic value of popular music whilst developing technical skills and industry knowledge.Course Content: Throughout the course, students will study popular musicology, music theory, music production, and composition, along with modules in entrepreneurship, building a digital portfolio, marketing and promotion, and live performance. The course content is built on three major threads—making, thinking, and doing—which intertwine across the modules to support a holistic learning approach.Key Modules: Students will undertake a wide range of modules, including Popular Music in Society, The Craft of Songwriting, Making Tracks: Introduction to Popular Music Production, and Pop Music: The Beatles and Before. In addition, students will also engage in modules such as Remastering the Past: Popular Music and Nostalgia, and Music Video Production, among others.Future Careers: This course prepares students for a diverse range of careers within the music industry and beyond, including roles in performance, production, composition, promotion, teaching, and research. Students can also venture into self-employment or entrepreneurship in the music industry.
