The English Literature and History BA (Hons) at Northumbria University offers an interdisciplinary integration of the two subject areas, providing students with a unique opportunity to study both English literature and history within the same degree. The course allows students to deepen their understanding of the connections between the cultural, historical and social contexts in which literature is written and read.Course Content: The course provides a solid grounding in understanding culture and history, how they are intrinsically linked and the factors that shape them. Courses introduce students to a wide range of texts from various periods and locales, and they will study many kinds of history including political, social, economic and cultural history.Key Modules: The modules are organized around central themes such as ‘Antiquity and Modernity’, ‘Becoming Victorian’, ‘American Voices’ and ‘Modern and Contemporary Literature’. In the final years, options may include ‘The American Century’ and ‘Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature’.
