BA (Hons) Product Design

The BA Product Design undergraduate course at Manchester Metropolitan University is a dynamic programme that prepares students for a career in the contemporary product design industry. Through the course, students learn to design products that combine creativity, technology, and aesthetic desirability. This course encourages students to experiment, innovate, and respond to challenges in a creative way whilst considering the functionality, durability and sustainability within product design field. Course Content: This course incorporates a learning through doing approach for the first two years where students engage with project-based learning and essential skills such as sketching and rendering. Students explore digital and physical prototyping methods, CAD and virtual reality. In the final year, students focus on self-directed learning, working to develop a major piece of design work for public exhibition. Key Modules: The course involves various core modules such as Design Foundation, Design Skills and Practice, Design and Society, Professional Practice and Portfolio, Design Futures, Critical and Contextual Approaches to Product Design, Major Project in Product Design. Accreditations: The course is awaiting accreditation by the Institution of Engineering Designers, subject to approval, and leading to Incorporated Engineer status. Future Careers: Following this course, students could pursue careers such as accessory designer, ceramic designer, furniture designer, lighting designer or even as a design consultant.
