MA (Hons) Economics

The Economics (Accelerated) degree at Heriot-Watt University is an intensive two-year programme created to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of economic theories, principles, and concepts. It aims to cultivate students' critical thinking skills and the ability to apply economic viewpoints to current events and policy debates. As an accelerated program, it combines the content of Years 1 and 2, offering the unique opportunity to complete a full degree program in two years instead of the traditional three-year format.Course Content: The program covers a wide range of economic subjects including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and Financial Economics. With a solid foundation in these areas, students will have the opportunity to delve deeper into specific areas with options for elective subjects such as Environmental Economics, Health Economics, Economics of Innovation, etc. Key Modules: Core modules include Quantitative Economics, Econometrics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Economic Theory, and Macro and Financial Economics. Optional modules differ each year but may include, Economic Policy, Economics of Competition and Strategy, Health Economics, and Economic History. Accreditations: This course is accredited by the Royal Economic Society (RES), a professional association promoting the study of Economic Science. Future Careers: Graduates can find career opportunities in typical economics sectors such as finance, business, and government, but also in non-typical sectors such as education, health, environment, and international organizations.
