**In December 2024, the University of Bolton was granted permission by the Office for Students (OfS) to change its name to the University of Greater Manchester with immediate effect. While we work to update our systems, you may see both names used in the information we provide.** A research-informed MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), where theory meets practice. Develop the knowledge, confidence and expertise to teach English in global, multilingual and professional contexts, critically examine established norms and assumptions about English, and design inclusive, effective classrooms for diverse language learners. English is shaped by diverse linguistic, cultural and professional contexts around the world. Teaching it well requires a deep understanding of language, learning and global communication. The MA TESOL at the University of Greater Manchester explores how language works, how it is learned and how it can be taught responsibly and effectively in multilingual contexts. The programme develops you as a research-informed TESOL professional with the knowledge and confidence to work in diverse educational settings. You will examine how English is used across global, multilingual and professional environments. The programme critically considers established norms and assumptions about English, explores how standards vary internationally, and prepares you to evaluate and adapt your approach to local educational realities. You will engage with varieties of English, communicative competence and evolving forms of global communication. Throughout the course, theory is connected directly to analysis and professional application. You will examine classroom interaction and learner language, analyse spoken, written and multimodal texts, evaluate teaching materials and digital tools, and design inclusive, evidence-informed approaches to language education. The programme draws on the latest pedagogical research to support rigorous, context-responsive practice. A strong emphasis is placed on multilingualism and inclusive education. You will consider how English teaching can recognise and build on learners’ existing linguistic resources while maintaining high academic and professional standards. As a Master’s student, you will develop advanced skills in academic writing, critical analysis and independent research. The programme culminates in a substantial dissertation or applied research project, enabling you to investigate a contemporary issue in TESOL in depth and contribute meaningfully to professional and academic debate.
