The Orthoptics BMetSci course at the University of Sheffield is a 3-year-long full-time program that focuses on the diagnosis and non-surgical management of squints and lazy eyes, as well as enabling students to offer sight tests and prescribe glasses.Course Content: This program combines clinical placements with theoretical study. In the first year, students will learn about the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eye, and study the basic and social sciences which underpin orthoptic practice. The second year provides detailed knowledge and understanding of binocular vision and investigative techniques, student-led research and patient management. In the final year, placements are extended to involve specialised areas of orthoptic practice. In addition, students will develop transferable skills in information technology, communication, professionalism, management and leadership.Key Modules: Some of the key modules in this course include Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye and Visual System, Introduction to Binocular Vision and Introduction to Investigative Techniques, Binocular Vision, Investigative Techniques and Pathology, Orthoptic Clinical Methods and Practice, Research Studies, and Eye Movements.Accreditations: The Orthoptics BMetSci course is accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council which allows students to apply for registration as a healthcare provider after graduation.Future Careers: Graduates can opt for a career in the NHS or private clinics, or they can take their career overseas.
