The BSc Biochemistry course at the University of York aims to develop students' depth of knowledge and understanding in modern biochemistry. It provides an insight into the processes of life on the scale of molecules and encourages students to think critically and creatively.Course Content: The course encompasses four broad themes; Structure and Function of Biomolecules, Metabolism and its Control, Information Flow and Function in Cells and Integrative and Systems Biochemistry. The first year of study lays down the foundation of biochemistry and molecular cell biology, exploring the chemistry of life, key biological concepts, and biophysical chemistry. In the second and third years, students get a deeper understanding of intermediary metabolism, signalling processes in cells, membrane biochemistry and genetics. Key Modules: Some of the key modules in this course include, Protein Function, Molecular Biology and its Applications, Cell Signalling, Metabolism and its Control, Research Projects, and Biochemistry.Accreditations: The BSc Biochemistry course at the University of York is recognized by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).Future Careers: Graduates from this program often proceed to jobs in the biotechnology industry, the public health sector and academia.
